On the Sidelines: Parents' Role at Fencing Tourneys

New York, NY (Nov., 2021) — Parents are necessary helpers for fencers, younger and older.

Their support starts at home, in lessons and in classes. However, at a competition, parents’ involvement can make or break their fencer’s performance.

Starting with arriving at the event venue on time and being prepared for a potentially long day. Make sure your fencer has eaten a good pre-tournament meal and is drinking water. Pack more water, sports drinks and light snacks to keep the fencer’s energy up.

If time is running short, the parent can take the place of the fencer in the line at equipment check so the fencer can warm up.

Once strip assignments are made, the parent can ensure their fencer is prepared at the strip on time and make sure TMFC coaches know where the fencer is and when it’s their turn to fence.

This is really important — the parent should document the fencer’s matches for analysis later. Recording on a phone or iPad is an invaluable tool for coaches to use later.

Cheer on your fencer — positive words are always appreciated. However, if you have a coach at your fencer’s bout, leave the coaching to them. Directions from more than one person can be confusing in the heat of the moment.

When talking with your fencer thought the day, reinforce the “Champions Mindset:”

  • I Have Everything I Need to Win

  • Champions LOVE challenges

  • Champions Never Give Up

  • Champions Don't Make Excuses

Keep your child from distractions. Video games and looking at Tik-Tok have no place at a tournament, especially when the fencer is preparing for bouts. Save the games for later.

Be present at the competition for the duration of your fencer's event, from start to finish. There is much to be learned from watching other fencers at a competition. Supporting club mates make for stronger community. Champions support their club mates.

Parents, understand that sports are a great place for children to learn lessons that will serve your child later in life. Dealing with setbacks, challenges and disappointment comes with participating in any sport.
