There was Great Fencing for Team Morehouse at the Junior Olympics

Salt Lake City, UT (Feb 18-21, 2022) — Shaun Kim led the way with impressive performances at the Junior Olympics, earning his first medal at the Junior Olympics.

On the first day of competition, Kim took seventh place in Junior Men’s Saber and earned his A22 rating. After a tough day, said Tim Morehouse, “he powered through to win his first Junior Medal and first Junior Olympic medal.”

Also on the first day, Alina Zhang made the top-16 in Junior Women’s Foil, and earned her B22 rating.

The Junior Olympics took place at the Salt Palace Convention Center here. Competition was held on the Junior and Cadet level for women and men in all three weapons. In addition, team competitions were held for all groups.

On day two, Madison Duckett was able to pull off a top-32 result in Junior Women’s Saber. Said Morehouse: “We’re so proud of all her hard work and perseverance. She’s also a wonderful and caring young adult every day. These are small but important steps in the right direction.”

On day three, Shaun Kim was back in action in Cadet Men’s Saber, taking tenth place. Fellow TMFC fencer Matthew Kim made the top-64 in this very competitive field.

In Cadet Women’s Foil, Zhang again made the top-16, and again was awarded her B22 rating. In Junior Team Men’s Foil, the TMFC team of Nickolas Rusadze, Henry Zhang, and Richard Lin finished sixth.

On the final day of competition, foilist Lin made the top-32 in Junior Men’s Foil. In Cadet Women’s Saber, both Brynnley McKee and Duckett made the top-32.

Congratulations to TMFC alum William Morrill for being named to the 2022 Cadet World Men’s Saber team that will travel to the World Championships in Dubai. “We’re so proud he got his start with us and we’re so happy to see his amazing accomplishments,” said Morehouse. “Congratulations also to Coach Achiko who has worked to guide and develop you as a fencer.”

Action for these fencers picks up again at the April North America Cup, scheduled for April 21-24 at the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, NC. Competition will be waged for Division I, Division I Teams, Junior, Cadet and Division II for men and women in all three weapons.
