Robert Wang Wins Cadet Men's Saber Gold at the October NAC

Orlando, FL (Oct 28, 2023) — Robert Wang is a gold medalist.

The Tim Morehouse Fencing Club star persevered through an enormous field of fencers to come out on top in Cadet Men’s Saber at the October North American Cup at the Orlando Convention Center. Called “a gutsy performance” by Tim Morehouse, Wang, 16, suffered from leg cramps in the final and was able to push through.

Wang called this final the most memorable in his long career. “I got my first gold medal despite numerous cramps amidst the unbelievable support of my coaches and club teammates,” he said, adding: “It fills my eyes with tears whenever I revisit those winning moments, and I will never forget this bout.”

The October NAC, or North American Cup, is the first national competition in the 2023-2024 season. Earning national points puts fencers in contention for the Junior Olympics and junior national teams that can compete internationally.

Several TMFC teammates competed in this event with the following making the top-64 (out of 216):

  • Shaun Kim, 9th place

  • Connor Chung, 15th place

  • Gabriel McCarthy, tied at 45th place.

Wang is a native of Greenwich, CT, and attends the Rye Country Day School. He has been training at Tim Morehouse Fencing Club in Port Chester since he was 10 years old. He’s learned his high-kicking style from his coaches Ziad Elsissy and Tim Morehouse.

The reward Wang received came in part because of his devotion to fencing. “I love fencing because it is an intellectual sport that trains and tests your limits in mental strength, physical agility, and the extraordinary capacity to make fast and winning decisions on the spot,” Wand said. In addition, “Traveling internationally for fencing also allows me to make friends with and compete against fencers from all around the globe.”

Congratulations!!
