The Cobra Challenge SYC-RCC Brought Back Big

Secaucus, NJ (Nov 26-28, 2021) — It almost felt like fencing was back to pre-Covid normalcy.

The Cobra Challenge SYC-RCC welcomed hundreds of fencers to the Meadowlands Expo Center this weekend for its traditional Thanksgiving weekend tournament. And though registration for the events was capped, there was a healthy turnout.

The fencers from Tim Morehouse Fencing Club rose to this challenge to improve themselves, earning many medals in both saber and foil fencing. In foil, Iris Yang brought home a bronze in Y-12 Women’s Foil and 7th place in Cadet Women’s Foil. Jackson Wong won silver in Y-12 Men’s Foil. Nickolas Rusadze won 6th in Cadet Men’s Foil. In Y-10 Women’s Foil, Grace Feng won 5th place while Savannah Li took 8th. Kai Toomre won 8th in Y-10 Men’s Foil.

In saber fencing, Shaun Kim earned silver in Y-14 Men’s, Ethan Kim took bronze in Y-12 Men’s Saber and Miles Chambers earned 7th in Y-10 Men’s Saber.

There were many outstanding performances that were also noteworthy. Pompie Yannopoulos finished in the top third of Y-12 Women’s Saber, earning valuable points. The field of Y-12 Men’s Saber fencers included 13 TMFC fencers (out of 78) who showed each other support. And seven-year-old Anika von Marie Kabiling fenced in her first tournament outside of TMFC club tournaments. She told her mother she learned a lot during the experience, including “to never give up.”

Congratulations fencers.
